Simpson University selects Gifford Construction for new building
For Immediate Release
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University has selected Gifford Construction Inc. of Redding as general contractor on its new Science and Nursing Building.
Construction is scheduled to start this summer on the $5.5 million, 30,000-square-foot, two-story building near the center of campus, with occupancy in time for the fall 2014 semester.
The university’s board of trustees gave approval in October for construction to start on the much-anticipated building, which will give Simpson’s burgeoning science and nursing programs more lab and classroom space.
Simpson University began expanding its science curriculum in 2007 with the addition of a biology major. Also in 2007, it launched a program for registered nurses wanting to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing. The RN-BSN Track is a 16-month program offered through the School of Adult Studies (ASPIRE).
A full four-year BSN began in January 2011 in the traditional undergraduate program. Interest in the program has grown rapidly, with 80 students enrolled in the nursing program this year, according to Jan Dinkel, dean of Simpson’s School of Nursing.
The university’s biology program has about 40 students. In addition to increased capacity for students, the new building will allow for more student-faculty research opportunities, said Pam Van der Werff, chair of the Division of Science and Math.
The Science and Nursing Building will include patient simulation zones, clinical skills labs, classrooms and offices, and specialized areas for physics, microbiology, genetics, chemistry, ecology, and anatomy.
