Simpson University Hosts Business Luncheon, Generation Z Discussed
For Immediate Release
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University hosted more than 400 community, business and civic leaders during its 16th annual Business Leadership Luncheon on Aug. 30.
Dr. Tim Elmore, best-selling author, speaker and president of Growing Leaders, spoke about how to understand, encourage and work with “Generation Z,” also known as centennials. In 2014, he spoke at Simpson about “Generation iY,” a subset of Generation Y, also known as millennials.
Simpson University invites a motivational speaker each year for its Business Leadership Luncheon, which is sponsored by Redding Bank of Commerce. Past speakers also included Pat Williams, senior vice president of the NBA’s Orlando Magic.
In his informative and entertaining message, which included video clips from “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” as well as music videos from the Black-Eyed Peas (representing Generation Y) and 21 Pilots (Generation Z), Dr. Elmore compared and contrasted these two youngest generations.
Generation Z comprises those born since 2000. They are the first generation born after 9/11 and thus have experienced an ongoing sense of global terrorism, unrest and uncertainty.
In contrast, Generation Y—the largest generation in American history at 80 million, Elmore said—grew up during an economic upturn and the end of the Cold War.
While millennials tend to view life as a “buffet,” optimistically customizing their choices, centennials are a little more focused on “coping and hoping” and tend to be more worried about the world, Elmore said.
“Employers are discovering that their youngest team members often have a keen intuition on where our world is heading,” he said.
Dr. Elmore teaches leadership courses and speaks at schools, universities, businesses, and athletic programs. He has trained thousands of leaders in partnership with nationally renowned schools and organizations like the San Francisco Giants, Stanford University, Virginia Tech, University of Alabama Athletics, Duke University, University of Texas, Chick-fil-a, Cici’s Pizza, Delta, and more.
Dr. Elmore has written more than 30 books, including the best-selling Generation iY: Secrets to Connecting With Today’s Teens & Young Adults in the Digital Age, Habitudes®: Images that Form Leadership Habits and Attitudes, Life Giving Mentors, and Nurturing the Leader Within Your Child, Artificial Maturity: Helping Kids Meet the Challenge of Becoming Authentic Adults.
