For Immediate Release
06.13.2017 (UPDATED (06.21.17)
REDDING, Calif. - For the third year, Simpson University’s School of Education will be one of multiple hosts statewide for the annual Better Together: California Teachers Summit, a statewide day of learning on Friday, July 28, free to all California pre-K-12 teachers, teacher candidates, school administrators, and other educators.
The North State event will be held in the James M. Grant Student Life Center at Simpson University, 2211 College View Drive.
The summit will feature TED-style EdTalks presented by local teachers, Edcamp discussions on teacher-selected topics and opportunities for networking and sharing ideas and resources with fellow teachers. This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Jill Biden, wife of former Vice President Joe Biden, will speak at St. Mary’s College, and her remarks will be simulcast to 34 other sites statewide.
The Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU), the California State University (CSU), and New Teacher Center are organizing the summit, which offers an opportunity for teachers to collaborate, re-energize ahead of the new school year and be a part of a teacher network that will last beyond the summit.
The theme this year is Now More Than Ever, which reflects the importance of bringing teachers together to listen and learn from one another. Sessions will focus on timely topics ranging from addressing bullying in the classroom to celebrating diversity to teaching students to be open-minded, critical thinkers.
Dr. Biden is a lifelong educator who has taught at community colleges, a public high school and a psychiatric hospital for adolescents over her 30-year teaching career. As Second Lady, she worked to highlight the importance of community colleges to America’s future while continuing to teach as a full-time English professor at a community college in Northern Virginia. With the February 2017 launch of the Biden Foundation, Jill and her husband will continue their commitment to public education.
