- 5.17.13 - RN job listings top help-wanted ads in Shasta County
Jan Dinkel (pictured), dean of Simpson's School of Nursing, was quoted in a Redding Record Searchlight article about Shasta County's unemployment rate and job listings. Jobs for registered nurses topped the list in help-wanted ads, and Dinkel was asked to comment on that. From the article: "Jan Dinkel, dean of Simpson University’s nursing school, said demand for nurses isn’t going away. 'I think the driving force is the fact the nursing workforce is aging and so there is a lot of people who are retiring as nurses,' Dinkel said, 'and I think there is a huge need in the acute care hospitals.'"
- 5.17.13 - North state hospitals report tighter operating margins
Perry Gee, dean of the School of Continuing Studies and a doctoral candidate in nursing, was quoted extensively in a Redding Record Searchlight article that looked at the operating margins of some area hospitals. From the article: "Perry Gee, Simpson University Dean of Continuing Studies, said that although he couldn’t speak to Trinity or any other hospital’s specific situation, rural hospitals’ margins face great financial pressure.'They actually have a negative operating margin many times,' said Gee, who’s pursuing his doctorate of nursing at the University of California, Davis. 'They have very similar costs as a large hospital. Their overall cost for doing business is the same, but they have much smaller volumes (of patients).'"

Gary Schmidt (pictured), chair of Simpson's Business Department, was quoted in a Redding Record Searchlight article about the growth in the Redding area of back-office hubs for technology companies, and how Simpson students are among those being tapped for these positions. Chad McCulley, a former student of Schmidt's who works in the tech field, is also quoted. From the article: "For most graduates, these back-office jobs are not going to be a permanent career, Schmidt said. 'But it certainly gives them a first experience and great reference from which to' continue on with their career, he said."
- 5.9.13 - Red Hawk softball player named Athlete of the Week
Hayley Rodriguez, a senior communication major from Torrance, was selected College Athlete of the Week in a Record Searchlight sports column. She led her team in a 3-2 come-from-behind win in extra innings over Cal Baptist University to advance to the NCCAA National Tournament on May 9-11. Rodriguez pitched nine innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out four.

The Red Hawks earned the No. 3 seed in this year’s national tournament with consistent play and by defeating Cal Baptist University on Thursday, May 2. - 5.5.13 - Public health report highlights death rate, diseases in region
Simpson psychology professor Rebecca Carter (pictured) was quoted in this Record Searchlight article about the high rate of gun suicide deaths in Shasta County. She addressed the risk factor of having guns available, as well as other contributing factors to suicide and how to speak up.
From the article: Friends and family should also broach the subject of a person's mental health, although Carter acknowledged it would be an "awkward" conversation.
"By asking the question and putting it out there, you can relieve anxiety and worry from that person. They don't have to bring that up," she said. Even if they're rebuffed, they should stress their concern. "Just say, 'I wanted to make sure you're OK.' That gives the opportunity to say that you matter. I think we all need to hear that from time to time."

Simpson University hosted the annual Kinder College Day on campus May 4, with about 1,200 kindergartners from north state schools. The event, put on by College OPTIONS, gives the children some exposure to college and future careers, with numerous organizations hosting interactive booths for the students. Channel 7 News and the Record Searchlight covered the event.

Simpson University’s softball team’s come-from-behind win over California Baptist University in extra innings in the NCCAA West Regional Qualifier was covered in an article by the Record Searchlight. Senior Morgan Davis (pictured far left) scored the winning run off junior Cheri DeJesus’ (pictured left) sacrifice fly. With the win, the Red Hawks advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in Bluefield, Va., on May 9-11. The article included photos, video, and stats from the game.

Austin Lobsinger (pictured), a freshman from Anderson, Calif., was selected by the Redding Record Searchlight for its first Male College Athlete of the Winter award. A heavyweight, Lobsinger placed fourth in the country at the NAIA Nationals. In his inaugural season with the Red Hawks, he won two-thirds of his matches.
Simpson men's basketball player Guy Varsek was one of the award finalists.

Nick Maddalena, a junior accounting major from Yuba City, was selected College Athlete of the Week in a Record Searchlight sports column. Maddalena won the individual men's championship at the California Pacific Conference in Vallejo and was named the Cal Pac Conference Men's Golfer of the Year.
Honorable mention in the column went to Simpson softball player Ryan Norton.

The annual College OPTIONS' Junior Day event brought almost 500 Shasta County juniors from 19 high schools to campus on March 26. The Record Searchlight featured the event in a front-page article that mentioned student Mariya Krutikova and quoted President Larry McKinney. Mariya participated in a college student panel. Dr. McKinney welcomed the students. "Regardless of whether you are leaning in or leaning out, my wish is for you to think seriously about a college education," he was quoted as saying.

Family therapist Christina Newton, who teaches in Simpson University's Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program, was interviewed by the Redding Record Searchlight for an article on helping teenagers deal with the recent news of the killing of a local high school student.

Guy Varsek (pictured), a junior history major from Camas, Wash., was named College Athlete of the Week in a Record Searchlight sports column for his performance in the Red Hawks' final game in the California-Pacific Conference Tournament against Menlo College. "For his heroic night in Simpson's near miracle comeback, Varsek is the winner of my College Athlete of the Week award for the second time this season," wrote reporter Thomas Lawrence.
Honorable mention went to several athletes, including Nichole Jones, a junior guard for the women's basketball team.
- 2.21.13 - Professor Discusses Gun Laws for TV News Series
Cherry McCabe, assistant political science professor, was interviewed by KRCR Channel 7 reporter Kelli Saam for a series on gun laws that ran in five television markets nationwide. Dr. McCabe was selected as a source because she lectures about gun rights as part of constitutional law studies at Simpson.

- 2.19.13 - Simpson Students Undergo 'Fasting' Challenge in Preparation for Trips
Simpson University senior Dani Perez and coordinator for student missions Sarah Bourns (pictured) were quoted in this Redding Record Searchlight article about some of the challenges students have undergone recently in preparation for upcoming spring and summer mission trips around the world. Students participated in a 30-Day Challenge to 'fast' from things like sleep, shoes, cellphones and electricity in order to give them more understanding about life in other places. The challenge culminated in a 30-hour 'famine' that included a morning of service projects around the Redding community. Students are offering help with work projects to raise donations for their trips.

Radio, television and newspaper reporters attended a sold-out Feb. 10 fundraiser inside Simpson's gymnasium featuring guest speaker Jon Miller, well-known radio announcer for the San Francisco Giants (photo to the left is from a press conference). Record Searchlight reporter TJ Holmes posted Twitter updates throughout the evening and wrote this article. KRCR Channel 7 anchor Mike Mangas served as master of ceremonies for the event, which sought to raise money for the Redding Community Baseball Field.

A profile in the February issue of Enjoy magazine features Sadie Roy, who is in charge of food services at Simpson's dining center.

The students and staff of the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program were mentioned in a Redding Record Searchlight newspaper article about their involvement in the Adopt-A-Family program coordinated by Northern Valley Catholic Social Service. It's the third year that MACP students and staff have joined other local businesses and organizations in selecting low-income families in need of clothing, food and toys for Christmas. This year 28 students selected three large families

- 12.12.12 - Interim dean of ASPIRE profiled as doctoral student of distinction
Perry Gee, who serves as interim dean of the School of Continuing Studies and directs the RN-BSN Track program, was featured in an article by the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Gee is earning his doctorate through the school. He and his wife, Julie Gee, who also teaches in the RN-BSN Track and was mentioned in the article, founded the Northern California Professional Nurse Network in 2011.

Simpson cross-country runners Tony Moore and Rebekah Studebaker were featured in a Record Searchlight newspaper article by Thomas Lawrence about how they began running and what the season has been like as they worked toward the goal of winning the Cal Pac Conference. Moore won the men's 5-mile race in 27 minutes, 17 seconds; Studebaker topped the 3.1-mile race in 19:45. Teammate Jaclyn Van Schooten is also mentioned in the article.

Jordan Daigre, a senior accounting major from Brentwood, was named College Athlete of the Week in a column by Record Searchlight sports reporter Thomas Lawrence. Lawrence writes that Daigre, "a forward for the Red Hawks' men's soccer team, booted in three goals in a 6-2 win on senior day over Pacific Union College. Not only was it the first hat trick for Simpson men's soccer since 2004, but it propelled the win that pushed the Red Hawks into the inaugural Cal Pac tourney."

Simpson seniors and soccer players Kyle Ochoa and Jordan Daigre, as well as head coach Luke Manwaring, were quoted in a newspaper article by Thomas Lawrence about the team's memorable victory over Pacific Union College on Oct. 31. Daigre earned the program's first hat trick since 2004, and Ochoa made the first goal of his college career.

"Simpson student Kaylee Lommori, 20, said Johannessen brought up some good points about the Constitution. 'I really liked the respecting the Constitution and not forgetting what our forefathers fought for,' she said."
Lommori and fellow student Kristine Rhodes were quoted in a Record Searchlight newspaper article about a Constitution Week lecture held on campus Sept. 19. Former California state Sen. Maurice Johannessen was the guest speaker at the event, held in LaBaume-Rudat Hall and open to the public. Educational institutions that receive federal funding are required by law to recognize the Constitution annually in some fashion during the week of Sept. 17, the anniversary of the signing of the document in 1787.

New Simpson men's soccer coach Luke Manwaring, a native of England, was interviewed by the Redding Record Searchlight after the team's 3-1 victory over Oregon Tech on Sept. 5 at the Redding Soccer Park.
