REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University recently purchased the climbing wall from the Shasta County YMCA to support its new outdoor leadership major and to use as a resource for students and community members.
The 30-foot tall, 8-foot wide, and 3 ½-foot deep wall, which stands north of the gym on the Simpson University campus, was purchased by the university with a significant contribution from its student government.
Each year, Simpson student government determines a portion of money that will be given to student activities on campus. The students felt that having a climbing wall on campus would not only benefit outdoor leadership majors, but would also be used by community members for leadership and teambuilding exercises. The students contributed half of the total cost of the climbing wall.
Adam Kalanquin, a junior in the outdoor leadership program and the vice president of Simpson University's Outdoor Leadership Club, said, "Our student government recognized the benefit of having the climbing wall on our campus. It can be used for teambuilding exercises, and it's a great way to stay physically fit."
The Shasta County YMCA offered to sell the climbing wall and the needed accessories, including shoes, ropes, and harnesses, at a discount rate to Simpson University.
Jeff Herndon, associate executive director for the Shasta County YMCA, said, "We are glad that Simpson University can use the climbing wall to enhance their programs. Simpson was our first choice to have the wall, and we're pleased that it will stay local."
