REDDING, Calif. - In response to high demand and community interest, Simpson University will launch a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy program. Having received approval from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the university will begin classes on Jan. 11.

The M.A. in Counseling Psychology is a 60-semester unit program designed to be completed in two years. Courses will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings to offer a convenient format for working adults.

The program will prepare individuals for licensure in the state of California as marriage and family therapists, and will also prepare students to work in a variety of settings, including medical, educational, employee assistance programs, military, church related organizations, and family and social service organizations, among others.

Dr. Brandy Liebscher, chair of the psychology department at Simpson University said the M.A. in Counseling Psychology will offer a unique experience.

“The curriculum embraces the perfect combination of rigor and support,” said Dr. Liebscher. “We are committed to working one-on-one with our students to secure clinical field-training placement and have established agreements with several local agencies.”

Dr. Liebscher said the new program is another way that Simpson University serves our local community.

“Decreasing social service resources, combined with an increasing level of stress in our communities, require that we do our part in preparing highly capable marriage and family therapists to meet the need,” said Dr. Liebscher. “In offering the M.A. in Counseling Psychology we are responding to the demand for a strong, ethically based program while being open to students of all faiths.”

The deadline to apply for January 2010 classes in the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program at Simpson University is October 9. For more information, or to enroll in the program, contact the Grad Studies admissions team.
