REDDING, Calif. – Simpson University women’s basketball Coach Derrick Pringle Jr. was pleased to announce the signing of five new student-athletes to the Red Hawks. The athletes will play for Simpson during the 2010-2011 academic year.
The students who signed the letter of intent are Julian “JJ” Soles of Portland, Ore., Andrea Thompson of Mira Loma, Calif., Crystal Nybo of Woodinville, Wash., Becca Wofford of Encinitas, Calif., and Rachel Rhyne of Redding.
Soles joins the Red Hawks after playing four years varsity at Grant High School. The 6-foot forward averages 11.5 points and four rebounds per game.
Coach Pringle said she is an intense competitor and will be a great college player.
Thompson comes to Simpson with three years varsity experience from Jurupa Valley High School. The 5-foot-3 guard averages nine points, 3.7 rebounds, and two steals per game. She will enroll in the biology program while at Simpson.
“Andrea is a sharp shooter who can extend any defense,” said Pringle. “I’m excited to be able to coach her over the next four years.”
Nybo is a 6-foot guard with three years varsity experience from Woodinville High School. She earned Honorable Mention All-KingCo in Class 4A and All Tournament in the 2009 Surf ‘N Slam Tournament. Nybo averages 9.1 points, 4.2 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.2 steals per game. She plans to enroll in the pre-nursing program.
“Crystal is a great fit for our program. She has a great basketball IQ and is a tremendous defender,” said Pringle.
Wofford comes with four years varsity experience from La Costa Canyon High School where she earned Team MVP and the hustle award and rebounder award. She averages 16 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists per game. The 5-foot-7 guard plans to enroll in Simpson’s communication program.
Coach Pringle said Wofford brings maturity and knowledge of the game.
“Becca is very competitive and hardworking. She has been coaching in the Amateur Athletic Union for the past couple years. I expect great things from her,” he said.
Rhyne, a 6-foot-1 forward, played four years varsity at Redding Christian High School. She averages 9.6 points and nine rebounds per game. She will be enrolling in Simpson’s ministry program.
“Rachel has tremendous upside in her basketball game,” said Pringle. “From the time I have known her as a freshman in high school, she has improved each year. She will be a great asset to our program.”
