Simpson University Women’s Basketball Signs Three for 2015-2016

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s basketball program announces the signing of three student-athletes for the 2015-2016 season: Olivia Edwards (Redding), Kelsie Jurin (Redding), and Shayla Smothers (Tumwater, Wash.).
Edwards is a freshman guard who played three years of varsity basketball at Redding Christian High School. She received all-league honors and averaged 6.4 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.
“Olivia is a great rebounder and hard worker,” said head women’s basketball Coach Derrick Pringle Jr. “One of the things we lacked last year was consistent rebounding and that is Olivia’s strength. We are excited about her future and development for the next four years.”
Jurin is a freshman guard who played four years of varsity basketball at U-Prep High School. She earned various athletic honors, including third team all-state, all-league, league MVP, and first team Record Searchlight. She was also the all-time leading scorer at U-Prep and third all-time in total points in the Northern Section with 2,094 points. Jurin averaged 20 points, 6.2 assists, 4.4 steals, and four rebounds per game during her high school career.
“Kelsie is one of the best players in Northern California and the best player in Shasta County,” Pringle said. “She is a person with high character and has a passion for Jesus Christ. We are looking forward to being a part of her journey and see her develop in our program.”
Smothers is a freshman forward who played three years of varsity basketball at Black Hills High School. She earned first team all-league and all-area honors and averaged 14.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game.
“Shayla is a great young women and a tremendous athlete,” Pringle said. “We are fortunate to have a player of her caliber and look forward to her doing great things at Simpson.”
