Simpson University Offers New Majors for Fall 2016

For Immediate Release

11.10.2015

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University is pleased to be offering two new four-year majors this fall: biotechnology and political science.

Simpson is the only West Coast college in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) to offer a biotechnology major, which prepares students for graduate work and careers in research, biopharmaceutical production, healthcare and other areas.

Students who study political science can specialize in criminal justice, international studies, social justice, or American law and policy.

“Political Science is essentially the study of collective human activity,” said Dr. Cherry McCabe, associate professor of political science, pre-law advisor and chair of the Department of History and Political Science. “We are excited to be able to offer this major which emphasizes mastery of critical reading, writing, thinking and communication skills to prepare students for active and effective civic engagement, whether in domestic or international politics, business, law, public service or beyond.”

Simpson offers a wide range of political science internship opportunities in local, state and national positions, including through the CCCU’s Best Semester in Washington, D.C., which gives students hands-on experience interning in a political or governmental office.

The biotechnology major places special emphasis on bioethics, giving students a chance to wrestle with the ethical and moral questions posed by the biotechnology field in a Christian atmosphere.

Students will have opportunities for research projects with Simpson professors as well as internships with leading biotech companies.

We have a unique ability at Simpson University to enable students to participate in the growing field of biotechnology,” said Dr. Brian Hooker, chair of the Sciences and Mathematics Division. “With the high demand for graduates in this field, we are looking forward to preparing students to meet the challenges of this major in a Christian context.”
