Redding Police Chief, Mayor, Newspaper Editor to Visit Simpson University Classes

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University’s Department of History and Political Science will host three Redding leaders as guest speakers in undergraduate classes during the next few weeks.

Redding Police Chief Robert Paoletti will speak in a criminal law class from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, in room 209 of the Owen Center.

Record Searchlight Editor Silas Lyons will talk to two sessions of American government, from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in LaBaume-Rudat room 201; and from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in LaBaume-Rudat, room 204.

Redding Mayor Brent Weaver will address an American government class at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in LaBaume-Rudat, room 204.

The Department of History and Political Science regularly brings speakers to campus to give students the opportunity to interact with community leaders, said Dr. Cherry McCabe, chair of the department.

“Exposure to a variety of perspectives, experiences and areas of expertise is an important part of a well-rounded liberal arts education and helps our students make connections between what they're studying and the world outside of the classroom,” she said.

During the fall semester, Redding Code Enforcement Supervisor Steve Willkomm and Deputy City Attorney Jacob Baldwin addressed students as part of Constitution Day activities.

The department also partnered with the Shasta Trinity Counties Bar Association to host an October talk by San Francisco Bay Area attorney Toussaint Bailey on addressing homelessness.

Launched in fall 2016, Simpson University’s political science major is one of the university’s newest -- and fastest growing -- four-year bachelor’s degree programs. Students have the option of pursuing an emphasis in criminal justice, international studies, or social justice. The major is ideal for pre-law candidates.
