Kansas Supreme Court Justice to Headline Simpson University Spring Commencement

Kansas Supreme Court Justice Caleb StegallKansas Supreme Court Justice Caleb Stegall will give the keynote address at Simpson University’s outdoor commencement ceremony on April 29.

Stegall, 45, was appointed to the court by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback in December 2014, following a tenure on the Kansas Court of Appeals. Prior to that, he served as chief counsel to the governor, making him the top legal adviser in the Kansas executive branch.

A graduate of Geneva College (Penn.) and the University of Kansas School of Law, Stegall formed Stegall & Associates law firm in Perry, Kan., in 2005, specializing in complex constitutional and commercial litigation. During this time, he handled a variety of public cases, including successfully representing American missionaries who were charged with serious crimes in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake there. Stegall was awarded the Kansas Bar Association’s 2010 Pro Bono Certificate for his work on behalf of the missionaries.

From 2009 to 2011, Stegall also served as the elected county attorney for Jefferson County, Kan. As the county’s lead prosecutor, he oversaw a full-time staff and personally handled the most serious prosecutions, including cases of murder, rape, crimes against children, and white-collar financial crimes, among others.

Simpson University’s Office of Academic Affairs organizes commencement ceremonies twice a year for graduates of all university programs: School of Traditional Undergraduate Studies, School of Adult and Graduate Professional Studies, School of Nursing, School of Education, and A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary.
