Recreational - Community Basketball

CLOSED FOR SUMMER — Re-opens Sept. 6, 2017

Simpson University Sports News

UPDATED 5.18.2017

Basketball at Simpson REDDING, Calif. - Due to the overwhelming turnout at our "Open Gym" for recreational basketball, Simpson University will host weekly "invitation-only" sessions for dual-full-court basketball games for men and women, ages 18 and older. New players must sign-up before playing, and are welcome to see if there is enough space (starting at 2pm). There is no cost to use the James M. Grant Student Life Center (gym) on select Wednesdays and Fridays, during the afternoon (subject to facility availability, capacity limits and participants' ability to follow rules).

Invitation-Only Schedule (w/ RSVP)
Wednesday (Starting 9/6/2017) 1-2pm
Friday 1-2pm
Open Gym Schedule (walk-ins welcome)
Wednesday 2-3pm
Friday 2-3pm

Rules

Appropriate basketball shoes required. Full court games will be played on both courts when enough players for 4-on-4 or 5-on-5 want to play. Teams will be arranged in order of when the player arrives to the gym (excepting days when *capacity limits require advance RSVP, and playing list and waiting lists will be pre-arranged on those days). If there are extra players, or a question about the order, players can shoot 3 pointers to determine who will play next.

On days where capacity limits are enforced, not all players may get an opportunity to play. You may be asked to come back at a later time, or another day.

Games will be played to 11 by one's and two's (three-pointers) or higher when no one is waiting to play. A ten-minute, running clock (when available) may also be utilized. The team that is leading at the end of ten minutes (or first to reach 11), will advance, or stay on the winner's court. The losing team from the winner's court will move down a court to play a new team of players who have not yet played (when two games are going). If there is more than a one-game wait, we will play to 9 instead of 11. If the game on one court ends before the other game, the gym supervisor may require the other game to play to a lower score.

It is the offensive player's responsibility to call fouls. Disputes will be solved by "shooting for it" and alternating possessions after that.

Fighting, shoving, spitting, abusive language and inappropriate or immodest dress is prohibited. Audible music is also prohibited.

THERE IS A NO TOLERANCE RULE FOR DISRESPECT. Any disrespectful behavior is grounds for an immediate time-out (with second chance) where the player will sit out at least one game, and go to end of line. A pattern of disrespect and/or repeated abuse of this policy (or any of the rules) is grounds for dis-invitation / expulsion.

*On certain days when gym time or court availability is limited (one court, or shorter time alotted), players will be asked to RSVP ahead of time, and capacity limits will be set/enforced.

**Simpson University athletes and university events and classes will be given preference for gym scheduling. Conference Services and the Athletics Department have graciously made the current time slots available and will their best to keep these days and times consistent.
