Sean Parnell served as Alaska’s 10th governor from 2009 to 2014\, following service as lieutenant governor\, state senator\, and member of the Alaska House of Representatives. Before and after his public service\, he practiced law for more than 25 years. Parnell holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Pacific Lutheran University\, a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies and Theology from Western Seminary\, and a Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law. From 2021 to 2025\, he served as Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage\, where he helped reverse a decade of enrollment decline and positioned the university for continued growth through initiatives focused on affordability\, student success\, workforce development\, and community partnerships. Unlike traditional competitive formats\, this debate series celebrates the art of effective communication by emphasizing civility\, clarity\, personality\, humor\, and storytelling — qualities exemplified by President Ronald Reagan in presidential debate settings. \nHosted by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute and held at Simpson University\, the Northern California regional invitational offers high school debaters the opportunity to showcase their speaking skills\, engage with current civic topics\, and compete in a format modeled on presidential-style debate.
