About the Speaker
Sean Parnell
Sean Parnell is an attorney, higher education leader, and former governor of Alaska. He served as Alaska’s 10th governor from 2009 to 2014 after previously serving as lieutenant governor, a state senator, and a member of the Alaska House of Representatives. Prior to and following his public service, he practiced law for more than 25 years. Parnell holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Pacific Lutheran University, a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies and Theology from Western Seminary, and a Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law.
From 2021 to 2025, Parnell served as Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), where he led efforts that reversed a decade of enrollment decline and positioned the university for continued growth. During his tenure, UAA advanced initiatives focused on affordability, student success, workforce development, and community partnership. In collaboration with the Ted Stevens Foundation, he also helped establish the Alaska Leaders Archive, a growing collection of leadership papers, records, photographs, and media that provides a unique research resource for students, faculty, and the public.
