Biography
Dr. Shorthill grew up in the Pacific Northwest and attended George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. As a sophomore, he switched from Pre-Med/Biology to Chemistry but never considered teaching as a career option. While pursuing his PhD at Penn State, Dr. Shorthill discovered the joy of helping others understand more of the world of chemistry, but it wasn’t until 2008 that he began teaching. After five years in industry as a Drug Standards Chemist, he moved to Laos in SE Asia to teach English. There, he met his wife Melissa and together they spent three years teaching in Laos. Upon returning to the States, Dr. Shorthill taught at his alma mater, George Fox, then at his wife’s alma mater, Toccoa Falls College, and finally here at Simpson. He and his wife and their three boys have lived in Redding since 2017. A favorite verse is Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
