Medical School Path (MD, DO, DC, DPM)

Although prerequisites will vary from institution to institution, the Simpson University courses that meet standard requirements are:

General Biology I & II
General Chemistry I & II
Organic Chemistry I & II
General Physics I & II
Biochemistry

It is recommended that students complete all the above courses before taking the MCAT (usually during the spring semester of the junior year) with the exception of the physics series (the MCAT does not cover physics). You will want to work closely with your faculty advisor to make sure you plan your courses correctly.

In addition, many institutions recommend:

One year of math
Genetics
Microbiology for Biology Majors
Human Anatomy and BIOL 1320 Human Physiology
Introduction to Psychology
Introduction to Sociology

Many programs look more highly on applicants who have had experience shadowing a medical professional, or who have held significant leadership roles on campus. Again: it pays to plan ahead.

In addition, it is often beneficial to demonstrate undergraduate research experience. Your faculty advisor can help you identify research projects at Simpson—capped by your presentation at our Student Research Symposium. Some graduate medical programs allow you to earn an MD/PhD—an exciting opportunity if you are interested in medical research. Medical schools are also looking for students with cross-cultural experience. You might consider joining one of our WorldSERVE teams.
